Finland is one of the safest countries for LGBT minorities in the world, we have the same-sex marriage law and the society in general is emphasizing equality everywhere. But how did we get to this situation? The gay sexual acts were discriminated yet until 1971 and homosexuality also was in the disease classification later than that. Where and how did the gay people meet each others during those years, or what was the impact of the war for the gay life in Helsinki?
Join this walk to hear answers to these and much more questions. On this downtown area walking tour the places and stories from Helsinki’s gay history are seen and heard and also tips for recent gay bars etc are given if needed.
Starting point: Meeting place for the tour is Vanha Ylioppilastalo (Old Student House), Mannerheimintie 3.
Duration: 2 hours.
Guide: Juho Rautio
